Should You Get a Countertop Or Over-the-Range Convection Microwave Oven?

When shopping for a convection microwave oven, one decision that you will need to make is whether you want an over-the-range or countertop model. Each type has disadvantages as well as advantages.

One consideration is size. Over-the-range models are often smaller than countertop models. If you don't have much space on your counter, you may want to opt for putting the appliance over your stove. Remember that purchasing a separate cart or other furniture to create more counterspace in your kitchen can be an option, too.

A major issue is the height that the appliance will be located at. A unit on the counter can be comfortable for getting food and dishes into and out of as well as being able to see inside to check on the doneness of the food. For children, a higher location could lead to burns or falls because they may decide to cook even if you have forbidden it. Burns can also be a concern for shorter adults as trying to lift a turkey or large dish from above their heads can be difficult.

Over-the-range models include a range hood. This can be a good feature from the perspective of not having to purchase a separate range hood. But, they don't tend to have as much power as a standalone unit, and they may not extend far enough out to provide ventilation for all of your burners.

Cost can also be important. Those models that have a range hood tend to run more than others.

Installation may be a concern. If you have to pay someone to install an over-the-range unit into your existing cabinetry, your overall cost will rise. Even if you are able to do the work yourself, it will take more time than for a countertop type where you just have to open a box and put it on your counter.

Either type of convection microwave oven can be an asset to your kitchen. Before making a choice, consider the height, cost, size, and whether you need a range hood to make the best selection for your kitchen.
