Body language is a universal type of language that will display our inner most thoughts and feelings to the public. Have you ever heard the expression that you wear your heart on your sleeve? That's what it means. Those who are closest to you and know you the best will be the hardest to hide anything from. But anyone exposed to you, with the proper training can start to see the hidden meaning behind your verbal words. Let's look at how our eyes will betray or confirm our words.
The eyes have been called the windows to the soul and for good reason. There are many involuntary actions that you perform with your eyes that display your real thoughts and emotions on a topic. Let's quickly review eye movement and what it could mean. Just as a side note, it's been proven that these eye techniques are pretty universal. If you look up when you are talking or thinking, it indicates that you are either trying to recall information or you are fabricating information. Looking up and to the left indicates that you are trying to recall a memory or information. Looking up and to the right means that you could be fabricating information. One place where this rule doesn't apply is in cultures that view direct eye contact to a superior to be in bad manners. They will look down in the submissive posture out of respect. But again, if someone is looking down out of respect and their eyes start to wander to the right, it could again be fabrication of the truth.
Lack of eye movement can betray quite a bit of information as well. If you are talking to someone and they keep their focus on you, then you know what you are talking about is of keen interest to the listener. I know when I'm in the role of a sales person, when I have the prospective buyer's eye contact; I have a pretty good chance at a sale. If they look away, then I know that this is a problem.
So, there you have it. Learn what body language of the eye is telling you and it can offer you a heads up to possible troubles down the road.
